Step 1: Double-Check the Vehicle Title

Before you fill out anything, take a close look at your title. Make sure all the vehicle information is accurate — especially the VIN, year, make, model, and body type.
If something doesn’t match your vehicle, contact the DMV to correct it before signing.

Step 2: Record the Odometer Reading

For most vehicles (especially those less than 10 years old), California requires a current odometer reading. Write the exact mileage from your dashboard and check the correct box for:

• Actual mileage

• Mileage exceeds mechanical limits

• Mileage not actual

Step 3: Write the Sale Price and Date

Enter the final sale price — or the agreed value if it’s a trade-in or partial sale. Be sure to include the date of sale (month, day, and year). The DMV uses this information to calculate the taxes and fees for the buyer, so make sure it’s correct.

Step 4: Seller Signature

Sign your name exactly as it appears on the title. If two owners are listed, both must sign unless the title shows “OR” between the names. ⚠️ Don’t sign in the buyer’s area — use the seller’s section only.

Step 5: Buyer Information

The buyer should write their full legal name and address in the buyer’s section. This ensures the new title and registration are issued in their name without delays.

Step 6: File a Release of Liability

Once you’ve sold the vehicle, file a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability with the DMV. You can do this online — it only takes a few minutes. This step protects you from future tickets, accidents, or fees after the vehicle leaves your property.

Step 7: License Plates and Registration

In California, plates usually stay with the vehicle. If you have custom or legacy plates, you may be able to keep them. Let the buyer know what’s included when you hand over the title and keys.

Step 8: Complete the Transfer Online
